As the world becomes increasingly fast-paced and disconnected, a growing number of travellers are seeking a more relaxed and immersive way to spend their precious holiday time with loved ones. This is where the concept of “slow travel” comes in – a trend that’s all about embracing the journey, not just the destination. By ditching the hustle and bustle of flights and connections, slow travellers can unwind, soak up the scenery, and make the relaxed journey a welcome part of their unique holiday experience.

For travellers located in Europe, Dream Yacht’s popular charter destinations are particularly well-suited to help you jump aboard the slow travel trend. With base location in some of the Mediterranean’s most sought-after and accessible destinations such as Croatia, Mallorca and Corsica, you can easily combine your overland journey with a relaxing yacht charter holiday, exploring the crystal-clear waters and charming islands of the Mediterranean at your own pace.

Not only does slow travel reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainability, but it also allows you to connect with local cultures, meet fellow travellers, and experience the authentic charm of Europe’s hidden gems. As people increasingly seek meaningful and environmentally-friendly travel experiences, it’s no wonder that slow travel has become a popular option for those seeking to reach the balmy Mediterranean in style.

With our wide range of sailing itineraries and flexible charter options, Dream Yacht provides the perfect platform for slow travellers to unwind and immerse themselves in the unique culture and beauty of the Mediterranean. Ready to slow down?

Why consider slower, immersive travel

Slow travel often encourages travellers to adopt a more mindful and immersive approach to their journey, which can lead to a greater appreciation for local cultures and environments. By taking the time to explore destinations at a leisurely pace, travellers are more likely to engage with local communities, support small businesses, and respect the natural beauty of the places they visit.

Imagine meandering through picturesque landscapes by train, watching the countryside roll by as you sip coffee or enjoy a leisurely lunch. Or, picture yourself cruising across calm waters by ferry, feeling the sea breeze on your face as you gaze out at the horizon.

For those heading to popular Mediterranean yacht charter destinations, slow travel is the perfect way to set the tone for a relaxing and rejuvenating oceanic getaway. By combining train or ferry travel with a yacht charter holiday, guests can indulge in a unique and unforgettable slow travel experience that combines the best of both worlds — scenic overland journeys and tranquil seascapes.

Slow travel for reduced emissions

Your slow travel journey can also help to reduce waste and promote sustainable tourism practices, such as choosing eco-friendly accommodations and activities. In particular, travelling by train and ferry can significantly help reduce carbon footprint compared to flying.

Trains and ferries generally produce fewer greenhouse gas emissions per passenger than planes. According to the European Environment Agency, trains produce around 14 grams of CO2 per passenger-kilometer, while ferries produce around 21 grams of CO2 per passenger-kilometer. In contrast, planes produce around 285 grams of CO2 per passenger-kilometer.

Trains and ferries are shared modes of transportation, which means that the emissions are spread out among a larger number of passengers. This makes them a more environmentally friendly option than driving.

Perhaps try one of these CO2 calculators to see how much more efficient your journey could be!

Slow travel routes to Dream Yacht bases from France & the UK

Several Dream Yacht locations are quite accessible from France and the UK, offering a tantalising escape to a sun-kissed Mediterranean paradise with just a few hours of travel. From France, you can hop on a train or ferry and find yourself aboard a yacht, basking in the warmth of destinations like the glamourous Côte d’Azur or the wild nature coast of Corsica. Routes from the UK go through France and take a bit longer, but allow you to see other parts of France along the way.

Paris to Saint-Mandrier-sur-Mer ( near Toulon)

Our yacht charter base in Saint-Mandrier-sur-Mer is perfectly located for discovering the highlights of the Côte d’Azur, from Toulon and the famed St. Tropez to historic Cannes or the spectacular protected anchorages of the Iles d’Or.

To reach our base in Saint-Mandrier-sur-Mer, take a direct TGV train from Paris to Toulon, approximately a 4-hour journey, followed by a short connecting bus or taxi ride to Port Pin Rolland.

Paris or Lyon to Ajaccio:

Despite being a French island, a yacht charter in magical Corsica will feel a world away from the mainland. Corsica has a unique charm and character that sets it apart from the rest of the country, and boasts some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the Mediterranean, with its towering granite peaks, pristine beaches, and secluded coves waiting to be explored.

To reach our base on Corsica, travel by TGV train to Nice or Marseille, followed by a ferry to Ajaccio. There are multiple ferry departures daily from Toulon. Or choose an overnight ferry crossing to Ajaccio from Toulon, which allows you to start your Corsica yacht charter upon arrival.

Rather reach Ajaccio by sail? Cruise to Ajaccio from Nice, Toulon, or Marseille with Sailcoop, offering scenic, relaxing and low-carbon transfers under sail.

Slow travel from Germany to Dream Yacht Mediterranean bases

A yacht charter in the Mediterranean is a blissful escape, and train travel is the perfect way to ease into your holiday. Enjoy a slow travel journey from Germany to one of Dream Yacht’s bases in Croatia or the Balearic Islands and take in scenic country sides and seascapes along the way.

To the Balearic Islands:

For sailing enthusiasts, Mallorca is a true paradise – stunning coastlines, secluded coves, and reliable winds make it an ideal destination for a yacht charter. Start your charter from Dream Yacht’s base in Palma and get a taste of the unique culture, cuisine and architectural treasures before setting sail for nearby islands bursting with natural beauty, such as Menorca and Cabrera.

From Munich, you can travel to Barcelona by train (with a transfer in Paris or Zurich), then take a ferry to our Dream Yacht base in Palma de Mallorca.

Germany to Croatia:

Dream Yacht offers sailing charters from our 3 bases in Trogir, Šibenik and Dubrovnik making your itinerary options nearly endless! Explore ancient walled cities and towns, sail to the pristine Kornati Islands, or discover the well-loved islands of Hvar or Korcula. An island-hopping adventure from one of these stunning locations can begin with a train from Germany to northern Croatia. Then take your time to explore inland Croatia while making your way to the coast.

From Munich, head to Zagreb or Rijeka, Croatia by train. There are many departures – some with direct routes, and overnight options. Consider a bus tour transfer from Zagreb to Trogir, that includes a visit to the spectacular waterfalls of Plitvice Lakes National Park.

Taking slow travel aboard your yacht

The slow travel mindset doesn’t have to end when you arrive at your yacht. You can also choose to adopt a more relaxed and responsible approach to sailing. By taking the time to explore hidden coves and secluded bays, rather than rushing from one destination to another, sailors can help reduce their impact on fragile marine ecosystems.

Consider adopting a flexible sailing itinerary that allows time to more fully appreciate the culture and natural beauty of your surroundings. Stay an extra night or two at your favourite places. Enjoy your morning brew in solitude as neighbouring yachts rush to their next anchorage. Go ashore to buy some local bread or wine. Snorkel a bit longer and find the hidden gems that the rushed visitors overlooked.

And, of course – hoist those sails, cut the engines, and feel the wind on your face. Those balmy breezes should not go to waste.
