Yacht charter Lavrion

Lavrion colorful port sunset landscape

Our base at Lavrion Port is at the south east of Attica, which is bursting with archaeological and cultural treasures. Lavrion, known as ‘the gateway to the Cyclades’   is a convenient base from which to explore over 220 Greek islands, including beautiful Santorini and Mykonos.

You’ll be able to explore some of the most significant archaeological sites in Greece during a Lavrion sailing vacation. These include a sail to Sounion, where you can stroll the ancient ruins of the Temple of Poseidon that tower on a cliff high above the Aegean.

From Lavrion, it’s a short sail to Kea Island, the perfect spot to avoid the tourist hordes and discover the beaches, including the sands at Liparo and beautiful pebbled stretches at Kampi or Spathi. Kea also offers fantastic wreck diving.

On your Lavrion yacht charter, be sure to spend a day in famed Mykonos. Wander narrow cobbled streets lined by whitewashed dwellings, or soak up the lively atmosphere along the upmarket waterfront while enjoying some mouthwatering Greek cuisine.

To sail in Lavrion, you’ll need a sailing license recognized by the local port authorities. Alternatively, you can hire a skipper. Read our guide to sailing qualifications for more information.

Things to do in Lavrion

Lavrion happy girl in beach catamaran charter

Visit the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion

Walk among the giant gleaming-white columns that date back to 444 BC and enjoy expansive views and breath-taking sunsets. It can get busy, so visit first thing in the morning or at sunset.

See the ruins on Delos Island

This small island’s extensive stone ruins include Doric temples, markets, an amphitheater and the iconic statues on the ‘Terrace of the Lions’. Stop for a visit during your Lavrion yacht charter and walk the stone pathways where the mythological god Apollo was born.

Enjoy Little Venice on Mykonos

This charming little area is located near the famous windmills, making it all the more scenic. It’s one of the most popular sights to see on Mykonos. No visit is complete without a stop to dine here as the sun goes down.

Climb up to the Church of Panagia Kanala, Kythnos

While on your Lavrion yacht charter, pay a visit to the Church of Panagia Kanala in the small village of Kanala. While there, you can enjoy the gardens and stunning views of the Aegean and the Cyclades.

Visit the Old Port of Naoussa on Paros

Weather insights

Lavrion local food salad greek gastronomy

When is the best time to visit Lavrion?

The best of the weather is between June and August, with summer temperatures reaching 91ºF. The driest months are between April and September.

The Cyclades has a long sailing season and the shoulder seasons are also good for sailing. Spring temperatures can reach 26ºF in May and fall still has good weather, averaging 73ºF in October. You’ll find the region less busy out of peak season.

What are the sailing conditions in Lavrion?

The sailing conditions include a N to NW prevailing wind averaging force 3 to 4. The Cyclades features the northerly meltemi wind, which peaks in July and August at force 5-7, sometimes, force 9. So you will need to be an experienced sailor to sail the meltemi. Or you can hire a skipper.

Beware of three reefs found to the north, middle and south of Makronisos Island and two reefs close to the mainland (Cape Sounio and Ali Pasas). There is heavy traffic in this area from steamers, fishing vessels and sailing yachts.

When returning to base, go stern to or bow to and use the mooring lines, not your anchor.

What an AMAZING experience. We’ve just returned from a week long skippered charter from Corfu, sailing around the beautiful islands of the Ionian. Paxos, Antipaxos and Corfu Old Town were beautiful and the secluded bays we had the pleasure of visiting thanks to our local skipper, Nicholas, were simply overwhelming. Fly and flops are no longer for us – we’ll be chartering with DYC for the foreseeable future.

Our group of 10 had an AMAZING time in French Polynesia from May 21-28, 2022! The food was amazing, our captain and chef, husband and wife: Henry and Mehee (sp), were incredible and the whole experience on board was a dream! We can’t wait to book another trip through DYC

Katie

Tahiti Crewed Premium

DYC provided a great sailing experience for my extended family on 2 monos out of Scrub Island. The boats were in great shape and preformed perfectly and the staff were friendly and helpful. Having worked for a number of charter companies over the years DYC is one of the best.

Baja is my favorite place now. There was something for everyone: sailed under northerlies with mostly calm evenings, snorkeled, fished, bummed it on the sandy beaches, enchanted by pelicans feeding, greeted by the barking sea lions and explored the Ispiritu Santo island geology. DYC La Paz base provided competent professional support with a well provisioned and maintained boat. We were nourished well by an onboard cook arranged with DYC freeing us all for more play. A vacation and an adventure connected with nature.
